- Photo must be exactly 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall.
- Background must be plain light grey or white — no patterns, gradients, or shadows.
- Face must be centered and cover 70–80% of the photo height (chin to crown: 32–36 mm).

What size is a German passport photo?
A German biometric passport photo (Passfoto) must be 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall. The face, measured from chin to crown, must be between 32 and 36 mm within the frame.
What background colour is required for a German passport photo?
The background must be plain light grey or white. Darker grey backgrounds are not accepted. There must be no shadows or patterns behind the subject.
Can I wear glasses in a German passport photo?
No. Glasses have not been permitted in German biometric passport and ID card photos since 2017, in line with EU and ICAO biometric standards.
Where can I submit a German passport application?
German passport applications are submitted at your local Bürgeramt (citizens' office) or Rathaus. You need to bring the printed photo along with your application form and existing documents.
